All Public Masses are currently cancelled, up to and including 29th March.

Bishops Statement:

The public celebration of Mass in the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly (with the exception of Funeral Mass and the Celebration of Marriage complying with the maximum attendance of 100) is suspended until and including Sunday 29th March, with immediate effect.”

(Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly)

Anniversary Masses scheduled for this and the coming weekends will be rescheduled when Masses return to normal.

Milford Hospice wish to sincerely thank all who contributed so generously to last weekend’s Church Gate Collection. A total of €1400.95 was collected.

Coffee Morning at Madaboy House in aid of Cancer Research and Milford Hospice will be held this year on Saturday, 25th April.  This year we hope for a special response as the coffee morning will be dedicated to celebrating the inspiring life of Sinead Dinneen who helped to make previous coffee mornings so successful.

Murroe Marian Club will not reopen until further notice due to the Coronavirus.

Murroe Tidy Towns would like to thank everyone who supported our recent table quiz.  Thanks to Darragh Ryan Valley Inn, Frank Ryan for setting the questions, Tom Holmes quiz master, Grainne Keyes for keeping the score and thank you to everyone who donated a spot prize.  On the night we made €676

Murroe-Boher Historical Society – As a precautionary measure due to the current Covid-19 outbreak, we are postponing this month’s talk, planned for 19 March, until further notice

Darkness into Light #Dil2020 After much deliberation, Pieta have taken the very difficult decision to postpone Darkness Into Light 2020 until the Autumn. The COVID-19 outbreak that we are currently seeing in Ireland poses an unprecedented challenge to our communities, and the safety and wellbeing of our clients, volunteers, staff and of the general public is at the heart of this decision. The event will proceed later in the year, and we expect to be able announce a new date in the coming weeks.

The loss of income that Pieta will suffer as a result of the postponement of this event is going to pose a significant challenge to the organisation. As you probably know, Darkness Into Light provides almost half of their fundraised income for the year, and without the income from this event they simply cannot continue to provide free, lifesaving services.   Therefore, Murroe DiL committee ask that if you are planning to walk or to make a contribution to Pieta House, please do so on the Murroe Darkness into Light page over the next few weeks.

CFR-Boher update:  For all emergencies you should contact 112 or 999.  As CFR services are being curtailed due to social distance, the CFR-Boher AED will be available for public use should the need arise.  For the foreseeable future, please contact Ita Richardson at 087-6886536 if you require to use the AED in an emergency. This is effective immediately until further notice.

Murroe AFC Team News: Last weekend the B team were unlucky to come out of a tight contest with Janesboro losing out 2-0 in the end, while the C team went down 3-1 in their league match away to Athlunkard Villa.

There won’t be any training or fixtures for Adult or underage teams for the foreseeable future, until at least after the 29th March deadline currently in place, following on from the directive issued by the Government and the FAI. Remember clean hands save lives people so keep em washed!

If anyone in the community has to isolate themselves for a while and is stuck for something and doesn’t know who to ask for help at any stage, message the Murroe AFC Facebook page and we’ll see what we can do to sort you out.

Keep an eye on the club Facebook page and Twitter feeds for news of the eventual resumption of fixtures. Stay safe and keep the paws clean!

Please check Murroe Facebook Page for up to-date information on closures etc.

Reflection: Lent is a Pilgrimage, a Journey, and it begins with Jesus being led into the wilderness of the desert by the Holy Spirit. The desert for the Jewish People is a very scared and symbolic place. It was in the desert that the Israelites encountered and experienced God. It was in the desert that God established the Covenant with them and said, ‘You will be my people and I will be your God.’ But they grew tired, frustrated and impatient with God and built the golden calf and began to worship it rather than remaining faithful to God.

On this, the first Sunday of Lent, Jesus willingly goes into the desert and there he will be tempted to turn his back on God in favour of power, wealth and fame. So, what will he do? Will he be like his ancestors and give into temptations or rely on God when he is offered, what on the face of it looks very attractive. His answer comes in three parts, all from scripture; ‘We do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God; do not put the Lord your God to test; and finally, you must worship the Lord your God and serve him alone.’

Jesus has the courage and humility to turn to God when he needs help and strength the most; he does not rely on his own strength and willpower when tempted. He doesn’t give up on God and God does not desert him.

Our daily temptations may not be as dramatic as those of Jesus, but they are no less real or dangerous. Ours are more than likely to be far more ordinary and subtle. We will have another cigarette, another glass of wine, we will do or say something that we know to be wrong in order to protect ourselves. These may start out as small temptations, but in the end they all add up. When we are tempted, we have two choices; to rely on our strength or humbly turn to God as Jesus did and ask for help. God did not abandon Jesus and neither will God ignore us when we ask for help.

We can’t control how others treat us; but we can decide how we respond and react to them; the choice is ours; not theirs. (Br Michael Moore OMI)

The Murroe AFC Church gate collection raised a total of €741 last weekend. Thank you all for your kind generosity and support!

Reflection: There is the old military that says the best form of defence is attack. Meaning, do to someone before they do it to you!

Jesus begins the gospel by quoting the Jewish Law; ‘You have learnt how it was said: an eye for eye and tooth for a tooth.’  This means that if you hit me, I am entitled, even obliged to hit you back in retaliation. If an eye for an eye was accepted by everyone, we would have a lot of blind people around us! Jesus suggests and asks that we find another way to solve our differences; but be warned, it’s not easy!

He says, if someone hits you, offer no resistance, on the contrary, turn the other cheek. If someone takes your coat, give them your other one! He asks us to give whenever we are asked for something and never to turn away from or refuse anyone! I told you, this was not going to be easy – at all! But he’s not finished. Tradition says that we are to love our friends and neighbours and hate our enemies. Jesus says, no, this is not enough and not good enough! We are to love our enemies. If we love only those who love us in return, can we claim any credit or appreciation?

What is Jesus asking of us? Is he being any way realistic is what he wants us to do?  When he himself was being attacked and spat at, he literally turned the other cheek and prayed, ‘Forgive them Father, because they don’t know what they are doing.’

Let’s dream a little. Every night on our televisions, we see so many wars and brutal conflicts taking place around the world. Guns are fired, bombs are dropped; counties are destroyed and people die. One side retaliates after being attacked. Imagine if they didn’t shoot and fire back; just imagine instead if they asked to meet; to talk and look for peace and reconciliation? We can but hope and dream.

We can’t control how others treat us; but we can decide how we respond and react to them; the choice is ours; not theirs. (Br Michael Moore OMI)

Reflection: The Scribes and Pharisees never missed an opportunity to attack and criticise Jesus. They just didn’t like the people with whom he ate, drank and befriended; the poor, the sick, the outcast, those they considered to be sinners. But Jesus in return was never in shy in challenging them for their behaviour.

In the gospel today, he directly condemns them for their strict observance of the law while ignoring the heart of the Law – love, mercy and compassion. For them virtue and daily living was largely measured by what others saw them do and heard them say. They liked to show off and win the approval of others on whom they looked down self-righteously. Jesus says directly to the people; if your virtue goes no further than that of the scribes and pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ Strong and challenging words indeed!

Reflection: Frequently we hear ‘experts’ say that too much salt is bad for us; this is probably true; too much of anything is not good for us. But food without any salt is bland, tasteless and just not very nice! Since ancient times salt has been used to purify, preserve, season and flavour food. At the time of Jesus, salt was very valuable and expensive. Roman soldiers were often paid with blocks of salt which they then traded. Salt was basically used as money! Hence the phrase, to be worth your weight in salt!

What is Jesus saying when he calls and asks us to be salt to the earth? Salt makes a difference to food as we said. Without it, food cannot be preserved and at times cannot be eaten. Salt, used properly can brighten and enliven food. Can we say the same about ourselves as followers of Jesus. Do I make a difference to those around me through what I say, what do and how I live my daily life? By my living the gospel of Jesus, do I brighten and enliven the world around me? Am I worth my weight in salt?

Then Jesus uses another powerful symbol to challenge us. He says to each of us; ‘You are the Light of the world… no one lights a lamp and then hides it under a basket, they put it on a lampstand and it gives light to the world. In the same way, your (own) light must shine before others.’

I often find this statement from Jesus strange. In the start of John’s gospel it says; The Word was the real light, that gives light to everyone.’ Later in the gospel Jesus clearly says; I am the Light of the World. So through Jesus, the Light of God comes into the world to dispel all darkness. This has echoes of the great phrase; The people in darkness have seen a great light. Now Jesus very clearly says, You are the Light of the world. This is very encouraging and also very challenging. We now share the responsibility with Jesus of being people of light who shine brightly in and for the world.

When Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa, he quoted a poem written by Marianne Williamson; from which this line is taken; We are all meant to shine; we were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

Today, take a moment of silence and say, Jesus is the light of the world and so am I! – (Br Michael Moore OMI)
