Access to Murroe
From the Five crossroads: only local traffic will be allowed access to the village on the R506 towards Glenstal Abbey from 3.15am. Stewards will be directing traffic to take a right turn to Murroe (marked Ros Fearna on Google Maps). From here you will be directed towards car parks.
From Abington Church: once you reach the Monument in Murroe, stewards will direct you towards available car parks.
From Green Road: car parking will be available in Garranbawn car park (on rhs as you approach Murroe) for people coming via the Green Road.
From Portnard: the walk route includes the section from the Monument in Murroe to Dan Dineen’s Cross (Liscreagh on Google maps) and there will be restricted access. There will be limited parking available at the school, so people will be asked to move to other car parks in the village.
Car Parking
To support car parking, we would appreciate if people pooled cars where possible. Car parks are within 5 minutes of Muintir na Tíre Hall where the walk will start.
Car parking will be available in Garranbawn, GAA grounds, Croker’s and other fields in Murroe. We ask that you follow steward directions to ensure that everyone will get safe and secure parking.
Stewards will remain in the car parks during the night. However, we ask that you do not leave valuables in your car.
Please do not park on the roadside along the walk route.
Walking
The walk will start at 4.15am from outside the Muintir na Tíre hall. Walkers will pass the Monument, turn left past the school, and take the next left. We will then enter Glenstal Abbey grounds through the back gate, follow the path to the front gate, and finish the walk outside the hall.
As part of the walk will be on unlit roads, we advise that you bring a torch. If you have not a yellow Darkness into Light t-shirt, please wear a high-visibility jacket.
The main street in Murroe will be closed from 3-5.30am. The road between the Monument and Dan Dineen’s Cross (first 1km) will be closed to traffic from 4.15-4.45am. From Dan Dineen’s Cross to back gate of Glenstal will be restricted to 5am. We will also have signs and stewards at specific points to ensure that any motorist is aware that there is a walk in progress. We have arranged for a motorbike rider to lead out the walk, and it will be followed by a van.
East Limerick Red Cross will be on duty, and their ambulance will travel with the walk.
Choir
Fr Columba and Glenstal Boys’ Choir will perform a welcome session outside the hall, starting at 3.50am. Br Columba has written songs especially for our Murroe Darkness in Light walk, so a special thank you to him! This will be a real treat, so we hope that you can join us to listen to the choir.
Refreshments
We will have tea/coffee, water, fruit and other baked goodies available in the hall after 5am. For Tea/Coffee, you will need to enter the hall by the rhs side door (down past the bottle banks). We will have food both inside and outside the hall (access through the main hall door). Please take time to join the Murroe community after the walk.
