Murroe-Boher Historical Society’s next talk will take place at the Muintir na Tíre Hall, Murroe (Eircode: V94 N740) on Thursday, February 14th at 8.30 p.m. sharp. Joseph Lennon will speak to us on “Place-names, People & Memory: A Century of Ambiguous Identity.” This lecture looks at some of the ways that the Irish state, almost a century after independence, inadvertently continues to remember its colonial past through place-names, buildings and monuments – while at the same time ignoring many of the state’s greatest patriots. Some topics to be discussed include: Why is a famous castle named after a hapless Norman king and not after its city? Why do infamous Elizabethan and Cromwellian soldiers still have places named in their honour? Who is responsible for the naming – or misnaming – of some our nation’s monuments? Admission €5 to non-members. All welcome.
