Murroe-Boher Historical Society – It is that time of year again when we resume our winter talks. Our first speaker of this new season will be David McBurnie, who will discuss “Florence Barrington: A Year in Russia (1916-1917).” Like other young women of her age and class, Florence Barrington (of Clonkeen House and Clonshavoy) volunteered to serve as a nurse during the 1914-18 war. She travelled to Russia, where she worked in a field hospital on the Eastern Front. This talk centres on her work in difficult and challenging circumstances, drawing extensively on her diary, which gives a vivid, often humorous, account of the courage and commitment of a resourceful young woman in a time of war.  The talk begins as 8.30 sharp on Thursday next, October 18. Admission – €5 to non-members. All welcome.

Murroe/Boher GAA and Camogie Clubs will hold a Fundraising cycle – Family 5k and longer 40k – on Sunday next 21st October, starting at Harty Park, Murroe. Registration at 10am. Please support.

Murroe/Boher Camogie Club: Last weekend our minor team received a walkover against Treaty Gaels, this puts them in a great position heading into their final group game next Saturday (20th October) at 4pm in Boher against Galbally. Be sure to get out and support our girls.

Murroe AFC Notes: Team news: The A team took on Aisling Annacotty in Annacotty last Sunday and it ended up 0-0. The B team continued on winning ways with a hard fought 3-2 win also against Aisling Annacotty, while the C team came out 2-1 winners in a tight game with Athlunkard Villa. Keep an eye on the club’s Facebook Page for up to date fixtures and results.

The annual Murroe AFC fundraising draw, in association with the FAI is on again. There’s a fantastic range of prizes for both the National and the Local draws as always. Tickets have just been released and are priced at €10 or a book of 5 for €50. Tickets are available from all coaches, players, and committee members from this weekend. The Local draw will take place at the end of October with the National draw shortly afterwards.

The U-7 Boys team is looking for a volunteer to coach/manage the team, (boys born in 2011), so if you’d like to get involved, email murroeafc@gmail.com or contact Chairperson Jimmy Quinn on 0872334561. All necessary training will be provided by the club.

Murroe AFC’s book “Murroe AFC The First 50 Years 1968-2018”is still available to purchase at Spar, and English’s. The book is a fabulous record of the story of the first 50 years of soccer in Murroe and is available at a price of €15. Now that the nights are getting longer, and you’ll be settling in by the fire, you’ll need a good read!
