 Murroe-Boher Historical Society will host its next talk at the Muintir na Tíre Hall, Murroe on Thursday, February 15 at 8.30 p.m. sharp. Our speaker will be John Hassett and he will be discussing: “Ballyvorheen House: A History from Cromwell to Cosgrave.” Admission €5 to non-members – refreshments included. Very little is known of Ballyvorheen House: when it was built, who lived there, etc. Today we know it as the Thomond Scout Centre. However it has been associated with the largest landed families in County Limerick: the Bourkes, Standish O’Gradys and the Lloyds. John will look at the earliest land records, maps and photos associated with the house and townland of Ballyvorheen from before the Cromwellian settlement, right up the foundation of the Free State in the 20th Century.

Murroe Boher Bord na nOg are hosting a Foundation Coaching Course next Friday 2nd February from 19.00 -22.00 and on Saturday Morning 3rd February from 09.30 – 13.00. This is for anyone interested in getting involved with underage coaching. Murroe Boher Camogie Club: Murroe/Boher Camogie Club registration for 2018 is now due. We will be in the GAA clubhouse in Murroe from 7.30pm – 9pm on the 9th February. Membership for the year is €40 for u8 to u18, €50 for students and €60 for adults.

St Mary’s Secondary School, Newport: Congratulations to our girls “Minor” soccer team who beat Colȃiste Mhuire Askeaton in the Munster Semi Final in blustery conditions. The final result was 2-1 with both of our goals coming from Abbey Lenihan. They will now play Colȃiste Fionnchua Mitchelstown in the Munster Final. North Munster’s Cross Country. Our team of athletes competed in horrific conditions, Amy Hayde came first in the girls 2000M, qualifying for the Munster’s on 23rd of Feb. This is the first of their events for 2018. TY Mini Companies. Are in full flight with ventures including, Filtered Water Bottles, personalised Gear bags and Training kits for sale in the school. Camogie. Currently Junior match is on Monday next vs Castletroy in the 1st round of the league. Senior Camogie are through to the Munster semi-final and will play a team from Waterford. Training continues in the school Gym after school. Pope John Paul II awards Over 20 students are entering the programme, volunteering in the local community. Breakfast Club Continues. The breakfast club is growing from strength to strength with an increasing number of students availing of the service. BT Young Scientist Award Winners and fellow TY students held one of our first primary schools Science demo’s for Newport Convent primary school on Thursday last, it is part of an initiative to promote STEM subjects and promote leadership skills and confidence in our students. Hurlers. Under 15’s are playing on Tuesday 30th Jan against Nenagh St Marys. In the Munster schools. The boys are training hard and hopeful of a positive result. They are also due to play Castletroy College in the Limerick colleges competition. First year hurlers are making great strides with a number playing on the under 15 team. Our incoming first years for 2018 are looking very strong and will certainly add to our strength. First years will also be competing in the Limerick colleges Blitz.

 BACKSTAGE-IRELAND DRAMA WORKSHOP. The Drama workshop for 7-13 year olds organised by Backstage-Ireland begins with an Open Day at Boher Community Centre on Friday, 26th Jan.  The Cappamore Primary Care Team will hold a health screening clinic at Cappamore Primary Care Centre on Wednesday 24th January from 2.30 to 5.30pm. This clinic will include a walk-in service for screening of blood pressure, blood sugar levels, body mass index and activity level. The team can also provide health promotion advice on exercise, smoking cessation, diet, vaccinations, breastfeeding and dental entitlements. All age groups are welcome.  Milford Hospice 10km Walk/Jog/Run will take place on Sunday, January 28th at the University of Limerick with a new route and new start time of 11.00 a.m. The 10km is open to runners and walkers of all levels and ability with all of the proceeds going directly to Milford Hospice. The starting location for the 10km route will be at the UL Arena with the warm up taking place beforehand as always at the UL Plaza. Participants will then progress along the new route, which will be well marshalled, before reaching the finishing point on the UL track.  Murroe Boher community games: Well done to all our players who participated in Round 1 of the Limerick Community Games Draughts in Mungret on Sunday 14th January. The u10 team of Killian O’Neill, Conor McCabe, Peter Ashe, Joseph O’Brien, Luke O’Brien, Cillian Holmes & Will Stockill have qualified for the County Final. Unfortunately the u14 team of John O’Brien, Emmet Crowe, Joe Shanahan, Dannan O’Rourke, David Kemp & Evan O’Dwyer did not progress. Thank you to all the parents and mentors and to the organisers.

 Murroe Boher Bord na nOg wish to advise that we are holding our annual registration night on Friday 26th January from 19.30 to 21.00 in the Club Pavilion in Harty Park. Thanks to everyone who contributed to our recent Churchgate collection, your continued support is greatly appreciated and will assist in the smooth running of our club.

Murroe Boher Ladies Gaelic Football Club, would like to congratulate Sarah Jane Flynn, Ciara Oliver and Emma Kett on a wonderful achievement in qualifying for the new Under 14 Limerick County Panel 2018. The girls will proudly represent their club and county in Munster, as Limerick line out against Waterford (on February 17 Cappamore GAA pitch), against Clare on February 24 (Cappamore GAA pitch) and finally in Round 3 versus Tipperary (Limerick venue TBC) before Munster knockout finals later in April. Limerick will also face up to Roscommon and Galway in pre Championship challenges away in February and March. We are extremely proud of all of our club and our players and we wish the girls every success for county season ahead. Murroe Boher Ladies Gaelic Football training has resumed and we wish all of our players a very successful season ahead.

Murroe AFC: Fixtures: This is the main fixture this coming weekend, but it’s a big one. The clubs first time getting into the 4th round, “out of town” stage of The Munster Junior Cup. We’re hoping there’ll be a huge crowd in Tubber in Sunday to cheer on the lads. Munster Junior Cup 2018 4th Round – Murroe AFC Club Grounds, Tubber, this Sunday 21st January at 2pm. Murroe AFC v Grattan Utd (Cork). All support welcome. Teas Coffees and light refreshments available from club shop on the day also.

Murroe Boher Historical Society: Happy New Year to all our members, friends and supporters. Our next talk will take place at the Muintir na Tíre Hall, Murroe, on Thursday next, January 11, at 8.30 p.m. sharp. Michael Hassett, our speaker, will discuss “The causes of the Russian Revolutions of 1917.” Admission €5 to non-members. (Membership for 12 months €20). Refreshments served. All welcome.

Murroe Boher GAA: The club are holding a celebratory Dinner Dance in the Castleoaks Hotel, Castleconnell to honour our victorious County Premier Intermediated Hurling Championship players and management. This will take place on Saturday 20th January. Medals will be presented on the night with dinner commencing at 8pm. Music afterwards by Johnny and Niall Skehan. Tickets will be available from all committee members from mid-week. We hope this event will be well attended and look forward to seeing you on the night.

COMMUNITY ALERT: Murroe Community Alert would like to thank the organisers of the recent Tractor Run held in Murroe for their kind donation towards the cost of the upkeep of the defibrillator which is in the porch of the Muintir na Tíre hall, Murroe. The defibrillator needed new batteries and pads. It is hoped to have demonstrations on how to use the defibrillator after Christmas.

Boher Community Development Association thanks everybody who supported their Christmas Market last Sunday. It was a great success. Artists, crafts people and culinary experts, displayed their work to a very large number of locals and visitors. A variety of high-standard local crafts were sold. Santa and Mrs Claus arrived by four white horses and carriage to everybody’s delight. Santa’s grotto had to be the best in the country!

Sharon will be speaking about Limerick’s Clothing Factories. Limerick city has had significant ties to the clothing trade; at one time it was home to the largest army clothing factory in Ireland. This factory sent uniforms throughout the world, becoming a leading international manufacturer in the nineteenth century. This talk will tell the story of the rise and fall of Limerick’s clothing empire. Admission €5 to non-members (including refreshments). All welcome.

Murroe Boher Bord na nÓg wish to advise that our AGM is to take place on Monday Evening December 04th at 20.30 in the Club pavilion, all are asked to attend. Murroe Boher Bord na nOg, wish to advise that our annual bag pack will take on Friday 08th and Saturday 09th of December in Dunnes Stores on Childers road. This is a vital fundraiser for the Club, and you support in this is greatly appreciated.

Murroe-Boher Community Games: Last Saturday, the 25th November the U13girls participated in the Community Games Futsal competition.  They came in 3rd place overall.  The girls got off to a great start winning 4 – 0 to Kilteely/Dromkeen/Pallasgreen.  Unfortunately, they lost 4 – 0 to Bruff/ Grange/ Meanus and were unlucky to lose the last match 3 – 2 to Caherdavin.  The scorers on the day were Laura Flynn and Gemma Ryan.  Well done to all the girls – Amber O’ Brien, Sinead Cusack, Isabelle Walsh, Rebecca Ryan, Laura Flynn and Gemma Ryan.  Missing on the day were Siobhan Cooke and Abi O’Mahony.  Many thanks to the organisers, referees and the parents for coming along to support.
