Reflection: So, who is my neighbour today? My neighbour is far more than the person who lives near or next to me. My neighbour is anyone who is in need. It’s that simple and that challenging! Every day in so many ways, we meet people who desperately need our help. How we respond is our choice. We can be like the priest and Levite; we can cross to the other side and ignore them. We can close our eyes and hearts to them. Or, like the Samaritan, we can go out of our way to help them in whatever way we can.

My neighbour is anyone who is need. St. James reminds us; ‘If we see one of our brothers or sisters who is in need of clothes or food and do not have enough to live on, and we say, I wish you well…without giving them the necessities to live, what good is that? It is the same with faith, if good deeds do not go with it, it is quite dead.

Lord, When I see someone who needs (my) help, may I be moved with compassion. May I reach to help them; may I do what I can to care for them in whatever way I can, no matter how small I think it is. (Br Michael Moore OMI)

Reflection: At the time of Jesus those who were sick in any way were ignored, despised and kept away from the temple and the synagogue. They were seen, treated and condemned as sinners and therefore so far out of God’s reach. Jesus came to put the record straight, and to challenge the assumptions of the self-righteous religious leaders who thought they knew better and were better than others.

Jesus came with the radical message that God loved those everyone else looked down because they were poor and marginalised. Even when he walked the roads of Jerusalem, Jesus knew he could not carry out his mission on his own. He called others to be his companions on the journey as he preached to people and healed them. He was preparing his followers so that they could carry on his work when he was gone.

In the gospel today, Jesus appointed seventy-two others and sent then out ahead of him in pairs to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. These were his co-workers; these he called by name so that they could share in and be part of his ministry and mission.

Jesus is very direct when he sends them out in his name. He gives them very clear and direct instructions of what to carry, what to do, what to say and how to treat those they meet. As he came to share and proclaim the good news to the poor, now Jesus is sending his closest friends out to do the same. He called them by name, trained them and is now sending them out as his missionary disciples.

It would be a great mistake to think that this gospel is just history and that is has nothing to say to us or nothing to do with us today; nothing could be further from the truth. Today, we are the very ones who are called by name by the same Jesus.

You and I are now sent out in his name to live and share the good news of the gospel with those meet each and every day. We are called to share the good news of the gospel with our family, our friends and neighbours and those who meet in our parish community.

There will be generous cash prizes each month with a bonus draw at the end for all participants who have paid the total contribution of €100.  Members of the Community Development Association will call with a leaflet to every house in the area seeking your inclusion in the draw. Results of the Diocesan and Parish Listening Process

Yes, you will recall taking part in the Research Project in the Murroe/ Boher Parish under Fr. Martin Hayes late 2017 and throughout 2018 in the remainder of the diocese. The future of the church at parish and diocesan levels was the subject of the study. The results are published and ready for discussion in our parish. However, due to the advent of exams and the holiday season, the first meeting to do this will take place on Monday 9th September in Muintir Na Tíre Hall, Murroe at 7.30 p.m. This is the preliminary announcement. Further reminders will follow throughout the month of August. We are now witnessing an era of rapid change concerning matters of faith and pastoral administration taking place during a period of unprecedented societal change at home and abroad. Your interest in and attention to this ground-breaking research will be much appreciated. Please feel free to talk to Fr. Loughlin Brennan P.P. for any further information you need. In order to replenish the Community Development Association funds to enable us to continue to run our community centre and in order to facilitate future enhancements to be made to our community hub, our Finance Project Team has decided to run a 5-month confined draw from July to November 2019 with a contribution of €20 per month (making a total contribution of €100 per draw participant). There will be generous cash prizes each month with a bonus draw at the end for all participants who have paid the total contribution of €100.  Members of the Community Development Association will call with a leaflet to every house in the area seeking your inclusion in the draw. Reflection: We all pray to Jesus at some time or other! This is what we have been taught and shown since we were children. This is an ancient tradition and a very important thing to do. However, in the gospel this Sunday, Jesus prays for each of us! Jesus prays for those in the gospel and us today with these profound words:

‘Holy Father, I pray not only for these, but for those also who through the words will believe in me. May they be one, may they be one in us as you are in me and I am in you so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.’

This prayer is about several things. It is about the friends of Jesus and their mission. Jesus prays not only for them but also for all those who will hear the good news through them. This also applies to each of us today. As followers of Jesus today, he prays for us as we try our best to tell others about him through the quality of our daily lives.
