Reflection: We are all very aware of the phrase, ‘people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.’ The gospel this Sunday is usually called the Woman caught in adultery. The religious leaders – the Pharisees – drag a woman into the market place and throw her to the ground. They say that she is sinner and deserves to be stoned to death publicly. Jesus, remains calm and looks at these angry self-righteous men. He then says to each of them; ‘if there is one of you who has not sinned, let him throw the first stone at her.’ But they can’t, because they are all sinners too! Jesus treats her with respect and dignity; he lifts and raises her up at all levels. He doesn’t condemn, judge or criticise her; but he does challenge her not to sin again. Jesus treats us the same way he treats the men and this woman; he doesn’t condemn, dismiss or judge us when we sin; but he does forgive and challenge us not to do it again. As in all things, Jesus offers us an example that we are to follow; we are called to love others, not judge or condemn them.

Reflection: Jesus was a great story teller! He spoke to the people in ways that they were familiar with and understood. He spoke about farming, shepherds, wine, fishing and sowing seeds. Jesus spoke the language of the people of his time. Today, in our gospel is no different.

Bad things unfortunately happen to good people; it’s a fact of life. At the time of Jesus, as some believed in the gospel, those who died at that hands of Pontius Pilate were great sinners. Jesus doesn’t think so! But he does warn those who are self-righteous that they will suffer – unless they change and repent.

To illustrate this, Jesus offers the people and us today a parable; a farmer plants a fig tree in his vineyard. Even after three years of care, watering and maintenance, it produced no fruit whatsoever.

He asked one of his workers to dig it up and throw it away. The worker suggested another solution: ‘Leave it one more year, give me time to dig around it; it may bear fruit next year, if not, then you can cut it down.’

What could this possibly have to do with us today? Let’s be honest; none of us are perfect. We all make mistakes; we say and do things that are wrong, that hurt others and break our friendship with God.

However, God does not dismiss or disown us; we are always given another chance to change, grow and improve. Who knows, we too might produce good fruit if we are given the time! (God has plenty of time!)

Jesus comes and accepts us as we are; he loves us not because we are perfect, but in the hope that we will change over the course of our lives and become perfect. If I were to wait until I was perfect to welcome Jesus it would never happen.

Murroe-Boher Community Games: Congratulations to the U13 chess team who have qualified for the Munster final – Harry Fitzgerald, Karl Waldron, Evan Duffy, Rian Horgan, John Brouder and Josh Devlin. Well done also to the second U13 team consisting of Conor Barron O Donnell, Sean Murphy, Billy Moylan, Zindin Laihem and Tadhg McEllott, who did not succeed in getting through despite putting in a good effort’.

Reflection: The Eucharist is a place of encounter and revelation through which we meet and hear Jesus. When the scriptures are proclaimed at mass, it is Jesus himself who is speaking to us. When we present the Bread and Wine to the altar, the ultimate transfiguration and change takes place; they become the Body and Blood of Jesus and are freely offered back to us. When we celebrate the Eucharist with each other, we too are in the presence of Jesus, God’s chosen One, to whom we are asked to listen. It is then that we can truly say, “it is good that we are here!” As we continue our journey through Lent, may we listen to Jesus who has the message and words of eternal life.

Reflection: In the Old Testament, the Jewish People spent forty years in the desert. They came through and were formed in the desert. It was in the desert that God spoke to them. They were tried, tested and tempted in the desert. Eventually on their desert journey, they felt that God had abandoned them and they in turn abandoned God. They gave up and gave in. They famously created the calf made of gold and worshiped it instead of remaining faithful to God.

So, like his ancestors before him, Jesus now finds himself in the desert having being lead there by the Holy Spirit. He is about to begin his public ministry and mission but before he does, he too is going to be tempted and tested. Will he remain faithful to God or give in as his ancestors did? How will Jesus respond when he is tempted to turn away from God and his own mission? What will he do when he is offered, fame, power and wealth?

As a human Jesus was tempted, but he did not rely on his own strength or will power. He turned to God for guidance, help, support and encouragement. Jesus knew where his own inner identity and strength came from. He had the humility and wisdom to turn to God when he was tested and tempted. He knew that he was not on his own.

What about each us as we begin our own Lenten Journey? Lent offers us the opportunity to look at our own lives, not harshly with negativity or judgement, but with humility and compassion.

The temptation of Jesus in the desert reminds us that we are not alone when we face our own personal struggles during Lent. Can we invite God into our lives when we are being tempted, so that like Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit we too will be strengthened to follow the path of discipleship and holiness?

Some topics to be discussed include: Why is a famous castle named after a hapless Norman king and not after its city? Why do infamous Elizabethan and Cromwellian soldiers still have places named in their honour? Who is responsible for the naming – or misnaming – of some our nation’s monuments? Admission €5 to non-members. All welcome.
