Message of Thanks from the DiL Murroe Committee

No comments
After all the work and preparation, it was marvellous to see 1176 walkers assemble for the Murroe Darkness into Light on Saturday morning. To open the event, the Glenstal School choir, joined by Nóirín Ní Riain and conducted by Fr Columba, who wrote music especially for the Murroe Pieta House walk, performed outside the hall.  The Pieta House message was read by Geraldine O’Brien, a message which means so much to those who have been affected by suicide.  The choir and walkers sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before the hooter sounded and the walk commenced.  Volunteers had put out lights along the route, which were greatly enhanced by arrays of lights put out by householders.  At the end of the walk, people were treated to refreshments – all supplied by businesses and locals.
The Murroe Darkness into Light Committee want to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us.  It would have been impossible to organise this without the 100+ locals who helped out, many of whom worked throughout the night to welcome the walkers.   We received sponsorship and support from our locals businesses and clubs, Glenstal community gave unstinting support – what a welcome to have the community come out and greet the walkers.  Looking forward to next year!

Thank you for registering for the Murroe Darkness into Light.  We now have 1,000+ registered, and are delighted with the response from you all.

We have ample car parking available, all within 5 minute walk to the Muintir na Tíre Hall.  Can you please:

·         Car pool where possible;

·         Plan to be in Murroe by 3.30 to facilitate getting to the event on time;

·         Follow steward instructions at all times – they will be directing traffic from outside the village;

·         Please note that we are operating a one-way system in the village, using both left and right lanes;

·         Go to the car park to which you are directed;

·         Do not park on the walk route, which includes the village street.

Use footpaths when you are walking from the car parks to the hall.  The section of the village from Crokers to Glenstal Gates will be closed from 3am-
If you live near Murroe and plan to walk to the event, please note that traffic will be entering and existing the village at the Monument, so be aware that all of these roads will be busy from 3am, and again after the walk.
We particularly want to thank everyone in our community for your support in organising the walk, the 50+ stewards and helpers who will be ensuring that all walkers have a safe and pleasant trip to Murroe & Glenstal Abbey.
Looking forward to seeing everyone early, early, tomorrow morning!

Darkness into Light, Murroe – starting at Muintir na Tíre Hall

4.15am, 6th May, 2017

Access to Murroe

From the Five crossroads: only local traffic will be allowed access to the village on the R506 towards Glenstal Abbey from 3.15am.  Stewards will be directing traffic to take a right turn to Murroe (marked Ros Fearna on Google Maps).  From here you will be directed towards car parks.

From Abington Church: once you reach the Monument in Murroe, stewards will direct you towards available car parks.

From Green Road: car parking will be available in Garranbawn car park (on rhs as you approach Murroe) for people coming via the Green Road.

From Portnard:   the walk route includes the section from the Monument in Murroe to Dan Dineen’s Cross (Liscreagh on Google maps) and there will be restricted access.  There will be limited parking available at the school, so people will be asked to move to other car parks in the village.

Car Parking

To support car parking, we would appreciate if people pooled cars where possible.  Car parks are within 5 minutes of Muintir na Tíre Hall where the walk will start.

Car parking will be available in Garranbawn, GAA grounds, Croker’s and other fields in Murroe.  We ask that you follow steward directions to ensure that everyone will get safe and secure parking.

Stewards will remain in the car parks during the night.   However, we ask that you do not leave valuables in your car.

Please do not park on the roadside along the walk route.

Walking

The walk will start at 4.15am from outside the Muintir na Tíre hall.  Walkers will pass the Monument, turn left past the school, and take the next left.  We will then enter Glenstal Abbey grounds through the back gate, follow the path to the front gate, and finish the walk outside the hall.

As part of the walk will be on unlit roads, we advise that you bring a torch.  If you have not a yellow Darkness into Light t-shirt, please wear a high-visibility jacket.

The main street in Murroe will be closed from 3-5.30am.  The road between the Monument and Dan Dineen’s Cross (first 1km) will be closed to traffic from 4.15-4.45am.  From Dan Dineen’s Cross to back gate of Glenstal will be restricted to 5am.  We will also have signs and stewards at specific points to ensure that any motorist is aware that there is a walk in progress.  We have arranged for a motorbike rider to lead out the walk, and it will be followed by a van.

East Limerick Red Cross will be on duty, and their ambulance will travel with the walk.

Choir

Fr Columba and Glenstal Boys’ Choir will perform a welcome session outside the hall, starting at 3.50am.  Br Columba has written songs especially for our Murroe Darkness in Light walk, so a special thank you to him!  This will be a real treat, so we hope that you can join us to listen to the choir.

Refreshments

We will have tea/coffee, water, fruit and other baked goodies available in the hall after 5am.  For Tea/Coffee, you will need to enter the hall by the rhs side door (down past the bottle banks).  We will have food both inside and outside the hall (access through the main hall door).   Please take time to join the Murroe community after the walk.

Toilets

Toilets will be available to walkers in the Muintir na Tíre Hall, the GAA clubhouse and at the back of the Church (one toilet).  There is  also a toilet at the sportsfield in Glenstal (follow steward directions if needed!!).

T-Shirts

If you have not yet collected your t-shirt, we have a limited number of Large and XXXL available.  We have no Small, Medium and XL left.  We will be in Murroe GAA clubhouse on Thursday, 4th May 8-9pm to distribute the final t-shirts.

For those who were unable to collect t-shirts at our collection points, we have a (very) limited number left.  Please call to the table in the hall as close to 3.30am as possible.
You can walk without a DiL t-shirt, but we advise those walkers to please wear high-visibility jackets.
