RTE Radio 1 Documentary on Glenstal Abbey and the Northern Irish Refugees

Murroe is the focus of this week’s Documentary on 1 on RTE Radio 1.

Did you know that in 1972, Glenstal Abbey played host to 172 women and children who were fleeing The Troubles in Northern Ireland?

In a documentary entitled “We Couldn’t Understand the Peace”, UL economist, and adopted Murrovian, Stephen Kinsella examines this fascinating, if somewhat forgotten, chapter of Irish and local history from the perspectives of members of the monastic community, civil defence and refugees. He will be discussing the documentary on the Sean O’Rourke show this Thursday, between 11 a.m. and 12, while the documentary itself will air on Radio 1 on Saturday, September 3rd at 1pm (and repeated on Sunday at 7pm). We will also link to the podcast as soon as it becomes available.

This is definitely one for the diaries. You might even recognise a few of the people interviewed!

Hi Men,

As you are no doubt aware, we are having our Open Day on Sunday 28th August and hope to receive a lot of visitors to our shed at Abington Enterprise Center. We would like to spruce the place up a bit in advance of the Open Day by giving the place a lick of paint. You can see in the attached photo we’ve already had a great start, but we have a bit more to do.

We are having a painting blitz tomorrow evening Wednesday 10th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, so if you can spare an hour or two and have a painting roller and some spare paint (whatever colour) could you please come along and give us a hand.

Many hands make light work!!!

We will have our weekly meeting then after the blitz to continue our plans for the Open Day and our stand at the Cappamore Show and of course to enjoy a cuppa and a few biccies while we have our Fireside Yarns.

So please come along and give us a hand.

Call 083-160-0845 if you have any questions.
