Reflection: Frequently we hear ‘experts’ say that too much salt is bad for us; this is probably true; too much of anything is not good for us. But food without any salt is bland, tasteless and just not very nice! Since ancient times salt has been used to purify, preserve, season and flavour food. At the time of Jesus, salt was very valuable and expensive. Roman soldiers were often paid with blocks of salt which they then traded. Salt was basically used as money! Hence the phrase, to be worth your weight in salt!

What is Jesus saying when he calls and asks us to be salt to the earth? Salt makes a difference to food as we said. Without it, food cannot be preserved and at times cannot be eaten. Salt, used properly can brighten and enliven food. Can we say the same about ourselves as followers of Jesus. Do I make a difference to those around me through what I say, what do and how I live my daily life? By my living the gospel of Jesus, do I brighten and enliven the world around me? Am I worth my weight in salt?

Then Jesus uses another powerful symbol to challenge us. He says to each of us; ‘You are the Light of the world… no one lights a lamp and then hides it under a basket, they put it on a lampstand and it gives light to the world. In the same way, your (own) light must shine before others.’

I often find this statement from Jesus strange. In the start of John’s gospel it says; The Word was the real light, that gives light to everyone.’ Later in the gospel Jesus clearly says; I am the Light of the World. So through Jesus, the Light of God comes into the world to dispel all darkness. This has echoes of the great phrase; The people in darkness have seen a great light. Now Jesus very clearly says, You are the Light of the world. This is very encouraging and also very challenging. We now share the responsibility with Jesus of being people of light who shine brightly in and for the world.

When Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa, he quoted a poem written by Marianne Williamson; from which this line is taken; We are all meant to shine; we were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

Today, take a moment of silence and say, Jesus is the light of the world and so am I! – (Br Michael Moore OMI)

Team news: The Fixtures are back after the Christmas break this weekend (Sunday 5th January), with the A team taking on local rivals Caherconlish in the First round of the Lawson Cup at 11am in Caherconlish. That’s the only fixture for this weekend. Keep an eye on the club Facebook page and Twitter feeds for up to the minute fixtures and results!

Reflection: The word ‘January’ comes from the name of a Roman god; Janus. His statue had two faces; one that looked backwards and the other forward. The Romans believed that this was the appropriate time to give thanks for what had passed and to be hopeful for what lies ahead. We keep this ancient tradition alive when we let go of the old year and make new year’s resolutions. For what am I thankful from last year? Am I beginning this new year with faith, hope and optimism?

As we celebrate the Epiphany, we recall that Jesus is born for everyone and the whole universe. The word ‘Epiphany’ means to show or to reveal; the curtain is pulled back and all is now revealed to us. God is not distant, silent or remote. God is with us personally in the very person of Jesus. When Jesus speaks, we hear God speaking; when we see the face of Jesus as the Magi did, it is God’s eyes into which we look. No one is outside the loving gaze or embrace of God through the person and presence of Jesus.

Beginning something new can fill us with anxiety, especially a new year. We don’t know what will happen to us or what lies ahead of us. But we are not our own; God is with us. There is the modern parable about the woman who was worried about the new year. She prayed to God saying.; ‘Lord, give me a light so that I can find my way as this year starts.’ There was silence. Then she heard God say, ‘No, I will not give you a light. You take my hand and we will walk into the new year together.’ We are not our own as we continue this New Year. The Nativity and the Epiphany call us to remember and celebrate the deep mystery and reality that God is with us in the most personal and intimate way possible. To repeat, God is now no longer distant, remote or silent. St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians reminds us of this and encourages us with these profound words; ‘The secret is that Christ is in you.’

When the shepherds looked at Jesus, they saw someone like themselves who later said, I am the Good Shepherd. When these visitors from East offered their gifts, they too saw one like themselves, who later said, Yes, I am King. Take some time these days to look into the crib; who and what do you see? Do you see yourself in this child’s face? Do you see someone like just like you? As Pope Leo the Great reminds us; O Christian be aware of your dignity and nobility, it is God’s own life that you now share.

Murroe AFC would like to wish all our members, supporters and the wider community a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Reflection: Today in union with the whole Church, we honour and celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, Mary, Joseph and Jesus. After the unfolding events Jesus’ birth, the gospel today tells us about the dreams of Joseph through which God speaks to and leads him as he cares for his new family.

Herod was eager to destroy anyone or anything that would threaten his power or authority, so he decided to kill all newly born male children. Through a dream Joseph is warned of this and told to take Mary and Jesus into Egypt for safety. This perhaps reminds us of the reality we see every night on our televisions; millions of men, women and children, refugees, exiles and immigrants being forced from their homeland because of climate change, terrorism and warfare. Despite all the lovely Christmas cards depicting the Holy Family, there is nothing romantic about being forced from your home. The danger and uncertainty that these people suffer today is exactly the same experience that Mary, Joseph and Jesus had.

While Mary is called to be the Mother of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirt, Joseph also has major part to play in the life of Jesus. Unlike Mary, we actually don’t know a lot about Joseph. According to the gospels, he is not present for the public life of Jesus. Joseph, like Mary was called by God; he too was unsure and perhaps even worried and anxious. He is assured and strengthened with the words, ‘Do not be afraid.’ God who called him will not abandoned him. Neither Joseph nor Mary knew what lay ahead of them as parents; but they accepted in hope and trust what God asked of them. They responded in faith and lived everyday of their family life believing that God was with them. They were not free from the daily trails, worries and anxieties of parenthood or family life.

Today, perhaps is a day for us to take some time to think about our own families and from where we come. It is said that we can choose our friends but not our families. Our own families are given to us as a gift from God, and in return we are given to them as gifts. All our families are sacred and holy places; they are the places where ideally we can truly be ourselves and still be loved! Our families shape and mould us in countless ways for better or worse. But as we know from experience, all families suffer and struggle with problems and difficulties. Sadly, sometimes families are not places of love or acceptance.

Today, in union with the Holy Family, let us pray for all our families and thank God for them. Let us pray especially for those families we know who are struggling or who are in pain in any way. As God was with Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, may God also guide, support and protect those families who are experiencing problems or difficulties. (Br Michael Moore OMI)
